Safe Zone-nowhere는 제주도에 살았던 어린시절, 20대 이후 서울, 런던이라는 대도시에 살면서 본인이 느꼈던 공간 변화에 대한 생각을 바탕으로 진행되었다. 사람의 감정과 공간의 관계에 집중하며 이미지를 캡쳐하고 새로운 공간을 만들어내고 인위적인 색을 입힌다. ‘Home’에 대한 막연한 나의 추억과 친밀함 그것은 어린 시절에 있었던, 언젠가 존재했었지만 더이상 존재하지 않는 것이라는 걸 깨닫고 도시를 옮기고 이사를 다니면서 나만의 공간을 갈구하게된다. 많은 시간을 이동하면서 서울과 제주를 오가고 한국과 영국을 오가며 느끼는 감정들을 한마디로 표현할 수는 없지만 집을 떠난후 지금까지 나는 편안함, 안락함을 제공받을 수 있는 공간에 집착해왔다. 개인적으로 안정감을 주는 구석같은 곳, 평안함과 동시에 고독감마저 느끼게 해주는 수영장같은 곳을 그리기 시작했다.   안전함을 추구하는 공간을 마음대로 구상하며 실제로 존재 하는듯 존재하지 않는 그런 곳을 만들어내고 있다. 하지만 유토피아나 파라다이스를 그려내는 것은 아니다. 결국 그런 곳은 현실에 존재하지않는 꿈의 공간 같은 곳일뿐이다. 비현실적인 애매한 공간이 아닌 좀더 현실적인 곳이라는 헤테로토피아, 유토피아의 공간이 존재하는 것을 추구하는 것이다. 조금은 어색한 이 공간들, 사실은 별로 현실적으로 보이지않는 파스텔색의 공간들에 어디서나 흔히 볼수있는 사물, 특히 누구나 하나쯤은 기르는 식물을 이용하여 익숙함을 더하고 현실감을 더한다. 현실감을 더한다고는 하지만 실재로 존재하지는 않는 곳이다.

런던은 매일매일 변하는 도시다. 금융의 중심지답게 개발중인 범위도 엄청나서 어딜 가던지 공사현장을 매일같이 지나가게 된다. 누군가의 집이 될것이고, 일터가 될 이 건물들이 지어지고 있는것을 보고있자면 이 공사현장 또한 집에 대한 사람들의 희망과 꿈 유토피아를 현실로 만들어주는 곳이 아닌가 싶었다. 공사현장이라는 곳이 무척 비현실 적이다. 척박해 보이는 땅에 수많은 인력과 기술이 모여 단시간에 많은 사람들의 공간을 만들어 낸다. 그리고 어느순간 누군가의 현실이 된다

The main idea behind my current work is the notion of a ‘safe zone’, as I have always been interested in the spaces where I feel safe. Everyone feels differently in different places, and I came to consider where my personal ‘safe zone’ is and how it relates to my self. Through my experience of living in different cities, I realised that my safe zone was my hometown, a town on a beautiful island where my family lives. I grew up in a very supportive and nurturing family. I was always the little girl in the family and was protected by my parents, grandparents and brother. When I had to leave home to attend university I felt very nervous and vulnerable, so I started to draw my hometown to connect my present with my past. I then painted a corner or swimming pool where I could stay calmly with my personal objects. These spaces have been extended to other places having a sense of utopia. My piece ‘A Safe Zone-Nowhere’ (2015-6) shows a paradise-like place that does not exist in reality but I tried to make the image look familiar. It looks like the kind of place that is represented in travel books and magazines - places which people fetishize and desire to visit. As previously mentioned, I grew up on an island, surrounded by a beautiful sea. This starting point of a blue sea is a great natural icon that allows me to represent a utopian vision. I want spectators to experience and feel my work before they understand my paintings. The point is neither a site nor a story, but a feeling. I want the experience I had, and which is represented in my paintings, to become part of other people’s experience. For myself, I understood utopia as a comforting space where people can explore their feelings and emotions, but through my research, I found that heterotopia more aptly describes the essence of my work and beliefs. The difference between a utopia and a heterotopia is that a heterotopia possesses a material reality. In my painting, this material reality exists as a plant or ordinary object set against the unrealistic blue sky or sea.
