첸칭야오 (Chen Ching-yao)는 대만 작가로, 국가 권력, 집단주의, 그리고 아시아의 복잡한 근현대사를 패러디와 코스프레, 영상 설치 등 다층적인 매체로 탐구해 왔다.
이번 전시의 핵심인 전쟁화에서 시작된 <전장의 소녀들> 시리즈는 제2차 세계대전 당시 일본 제국주의가 선전 도구로 활용했던 관제 기록화를 모티프로 한다. 특히 대만 근대 미술의 개척자인 여성 화가 천진(Chen Chin, 陳進)의 작품에서 영감을 얻었다.
첸칭야오는 원작 속 여성들의 정적인 모습을 현대의 영상 언어로 치환하며, 전쟁이라는 거대 서사 속에 가려진 여성의 일상을 드러낸다. 이는 단순히 과거를 재현하는 것을 넘어, 현재 아시아가 직면한 정치적 긴장감과 평화로운 일상 사이의 기묘한 균형을 보여준다.
Chen Ching-yao is a Taiwanese artist who has explored state power, collectivism, and the complex modern and contemporary history of Asia through multi-layered media, including parody, cosplay, and video installation.
The core of this exhibition, the “Girls in the Battlefield” series, is inspired by the official war records (war paintings) used as propaganda tools by Japanese imperialism during World War II. In particular, the artist draws inspiration from the works of Chen Chin (陳進), a pioneer of modern Taiwanese art.
By translating the static figures of women from the original paintings into a contemporary cinematic language, Chen
Ching-yao reveals the everyday lives of women hidden within the grand narrative of war. This goes beyond a mere reproduction of the past, illustrating the uncanny balance between the current political tensions facing Asia and the tranquility of daily life.
